A&P introduced their own brand called Ann Page that produced a wide variety of products that sold cheaper than the name brands. This was not about a name brand company slapping the grocery store’s name on their products.

6 de abr. de 2009 · Through the 1950s, A&P continued to be America’s dominant grocery retailer (and at one point, its largest retailer of any sort), but some disturbing trends were starting to emerge. The company’s conservative policies were not in tune with the retail boom of the 1950s, and A&P’s largely urban (and aging) store base was concentrated in urban areas rather than the growing suburbs.
Twenty-five years later there were about 14,000 “economy stores,” and A&P was the largest grocery chain in the United States; in the 1930s A&P began operating stores in Canada. In 1936 the first of A&P’s supermarkets was opened; and these, fewer in number, eventually supplanted the former smaller stores.
