Antigone, also known as The Antigone of Sophocles, is an adaptation by the German dramatist Bertolt Brecht of Hölderlin 's translation of Sophocles' tragedy. It was first performed at the Chur Stadttheater in Switzerland in 1948, with Brecht's second wife Helene Weigel, in the lead role. [1] .
Anouilh's Antigone set the issue of responsibility in individual terms; Hasenclever and Brecht attempted to define moral responsibility in terms of the German nation.
This chapter is a detailed analysis of brecht's 'the antigone of sophocles' and its first production (directed by brecht himself) in chur (switzerland) in 1948. Ruth beralau's set of colour photographs, which is published here for the first time in its entirety, is fully integrated into the analysis. The play's reception history is also considered.
