Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (Richmond, 10 de julio de 1943-Nueva York, 6 de febrero de 1993) fue un tenista estadounidense, número 2 del mundo y ganador de tres títulos de Grand Slam. Fue el único jugador afroamericano en haber ganado los campeonatos de Wimbledon , el Abierto de Estados Unidos y el Abierto de Australia en individuales.

Arthur Ashe was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Arthur Ashe Sr. (d. 1989) and Mattie Cordell Cunningham Ashe on July 10, 1943. He had a brother, Johnnie, who was five years younger than him. [11] The brothers were born into a family that claimed direct descent from Amar, a West African woman who was enslaved and brought to America in 1735 aboard a ship called The Doddington . [12]

Childhood / Formative Years. On July 10, 1943 Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was born to parents Arthur Sr. and Mattie C. Ashe in Richmond, Virginia. Arthur began learning tennis from an early age, in part because his father took a post at Brook Field in 1947.
