Arthur C. Clarke nació el 16 de diciembre de 1917 en Minehead, Somerset. Tras acabar sus estudios secundarios se trasladó a Londres en 1936. Fue desde niño un aficionado a la astronomía y en 1949 el apartamento en que vivía en Londres se convirtió en el cuartel central de la Sociedad Interplanetaria Británica .
