Barnyardgrass is an annual grassy weed found throughout North America. It prefers moist, nutrient-rich soils like those found in lawns and garden beds. It is a coarse, sprawling, purple-tinged annual grassy weed.
Barnyardgrass has a fibrous root system and can grow new roots where tillers touch the ground. The inflorescence is a green to purple, lumpy panicle. Short stalks are widely spaced along the rachis, although this feature can vary. Seeds are teardrop shaped, brown-gray, and flat on one side, measuring about 0.13” (0.33 cm) in size.
