Field Marshal William Joseph Slim, 1st Viscount Slim, KG, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, GBE, DSO, MC, PC (6 August 1891 – 14 December 1970), usually known as Bill Slim, was a British military commander and the 13th Governor-General of Australia.

Field Marshal William Slim is best known for commanding the Fourteenth Army in Burma during the Second World War (1939-45). He inherited a disastrous situation which, with pragmatic skill and quiet charisma, he turned to ultimate victory.

Eastern Army remained responsible for operations against the Japanese, as part of British 11th Army Group (commanded by Giffard). Lieutenant General William Slim , then commanding XV Corps, was appointed to the command of the Army.

During the Second World War he led the 14th Army, the so-called "forgotten army" in the Burma campaign. After the war he became the first British officer who had served in the Indian Army to be appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff. From 1953 to 1959 he was Governor-General of Australia.
As commander of the newly formed British 14th “Forgotten” Army, Slim was to march back and, after two years of bitter fighting, liberate Burma and inflict on the Japanese their greatest land defeat of the war.
