Recorded in collaboration with the musician Brian Eno and the producer Tony Visconti, it was the final release of his Berlin Trilogy, following Low and "Heroes" (both 1977).

Much of the Lodger album that would become Bowie’s Berlin swansong was finished in New York with master producer Tony Visconti again at the helm, and Eno co-writing most of the genre-fluid songs.
