Brian Van Holt was born in Waukegan, Illinois on July 6, 1969, and was raised in Huntington Beach, California. [1] He is of Scottish and Irish descent (not Dutch as is widely believed), saying in April 2003, "My nickname is 'Dutch' but my family's part of the McGregor clan. Kyle was previously married to April, the pair had two children, Charlie and a daughter. At some point, likely during the nineties or early two thousands, Kyle became a member of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original. In 2003, Kyle and Harry "Opie" Winston committed an arson, but Kyle fled when the police arrived, and abandoned Opie at the scene. As a result, Opie was arrested and sentenced to five years in Chino.
Consequently, Kyle was excommunicated from the club, his wife divorced him, and he was forced to leave Charming. He tried multiple times to have his club tattoos blacked out, but couldn’t work up the courage; the club was a massive part of his life he didn't want to let go. Eventually he started a relationship with a younger woman and got a job at Sparks Brothers, where he made money on the side funnelling stolen parts.

Jackson "Jax" Teller, Vice President of SAMCRO speaks to Kyle as he enters the fair, Kyle quickly tells Jax that he knows his boundaries and won't overstep anything. No sooner has he finished being warned by Jax, he tells him that he has something for the club, selling stolen vehicle parts, Jax throws him against a wall and tells him he can't buy his way back in to the club. Jax releases Kyle and tells him to stay away from him.
Opie follows Kyle in to an empty hall and Kyle immediately says that he has done what Jax has asked, staying away from everyone. Opie begins to remove his rings and he tells Kyle they need to settle some things. Kyle says he meant to come to prison to speak to Opie but it didn't seem right, before he has time to finish his sentence, he is slugged across the face by Opie and knocked to the floor.
Jax tracks down Opie and Kyle, who have just finished beating on each other and settling old beef. Kyle admits that he misses the club life and the respect and money it bought him. Jax asks Kyle again about the stolen vehicle parts he mentioned earlier, Jax says they can bring it to Clay if Kyle hangs around tonight and he agrees, saying he can hear his son's band play some other time.
The club at the charity event learn from Clay that they are going to pick up the Chinese money right now, Opie and Kyle head back to the clubhouse.
Back at the clubhouse, the club lure Kyle in to the garage at the prospect of showing him Robert "Bobby Elvis" Munson's vintage motorcycle. As the club circle him, Kyle quickly realises that there is no such things to speak of. Jax demands Kyle remove his shirt, he refuses and Bobby and Alexander "Tig" Trager wrestle it off him, revealing his large SAMCRO back tattoo. Kyle begs for forgiveness, saying it is the only part of the club he still has left. Clay coldly asks Kyle if he would prefer fire or a knife to remove the ink. Kyle accepts his fate and says fire. The club string him up on a car lift as Tig lights a blowtorch, Jax gives Kyle a drink of some whiskey before Jax douses his back in it.
