He looks better day by day and is regaining some of his lost pounds.” Some historians believe her husband, Calvin, had a long bout of depression after their son’s death.

He died at 10:20 p.m. Some who were there say that the president was in perfect control of his emotions; others, that he was hysterical, shouting he would soon join his son in death.

The senior Coolidge administered the presidential oath of office to his son at their family homestead in the early morning hours of August 3, 1923, following the death of President Warren G. Harding .
