On the 3rd December 2017, cardiovascular experts from all over the world met to celebrate the 50th anniversary of heart transplantation in Cape Town, South Africa, the place where Dr Christiaan Barnard had carried out the world’s first human-to-human heart transplantation at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) 50 years earlier.

Barnard, along with his three brothers, grew up extremely poor and attended the local public schools. Barnard then went on to the University of Cape Town, where he received a master's degree in 1953.
Christiaan (Chris) Barnard was born in South Africa in 1922 and qualified in medicine at the University of Cape Town in 1946. Following surgical training in Cape Town and Minneapolis, Barnard established a successful open heart surgery program at Groote Schuur Hospital. 22 de ago. de 2013 · Im Jahr 1958 kehrte Christiaan Barnard nach Südafrika zurück und ließ sich als praktischer Arzt in Kapstadt nieder. Nach einiger Zeit wurde er chirurgischer Assistenzarzt und später der Direktor der “Medical School” von der Universität in Kapstadt. Im Alter von 40 Jahren wurde Barnard zum Professor für Thoraxchirurgie berufen.

Also, his last wife is the only one who bore him a girl child, Lara Barnard. 8. Barnard retired in 1983. It was after developing rheumatoid arthritis in his hands that Barnard’s career ended.
