Christiaan Barnard in 1968. Christiaan Neethling Barnard ( Beaufort-Wes, Zuid-Afrika; 8 november 1922 – Paphos, Cyprus; 2 september 2001) was een Zuid-Afrikaans hartchirurg. Hij verrichtte de eerste geslaagde harttransplantatie van mens op mens.

Christiaan Neethling Barnard was born in the town of Beaufort West, on the edge of the great Karoo, the dry and arid interior of South Africa, in 1922. His father was a preacher and there were 4 boys in the family. He did well at school , learned music and played sport, and decided on leaving school to study medicine at the University of Cape Town.

In 1948 he married his first wife, Aletta (Louwtjie) Louw. They were divorced in 1969. They had two children, Deidre (now Visser) and a son Andre, who died in 1984.
