Christiaan had three surviving siblings; two brothers named Johannes Timotheus Barnard and Marius Stephanus Barnard and a sister, Dodsley Retief Barnard. Another brother, Abraham, died at the age of three while a sister was stillborn.
International fame took a toll on his family, and in 1969, Barnard and his wife divorced. In 1970, he married heiress Barbara Zoellner when she was 19, the same age as his son, and they had two children: Frederick (born 1972) and Christiaan Jr. (born 1974). [61]

Christiaan Neethling Barnard (Beaufort West, Unión Sudafricana, 8 de noviembre de 1922-Pafos, Chipre, 2 de septiembre de 2001) fue un médico sudafricano que pasó a la historia por haber sido el primero en realizar un trasplante de corazón humano del que se tiene constancia.

Christiaan Barnard’s family life was somewhat unstable compared to his booming surgical career. Barnard was perhaps particularly close to his firstborn Deirdre, who proved to be a champion water skier from a very young age.
