The red portion is the center of each edge, with the yellow marking the 2x2 area that is the exact middle of the chunk. Treasure will be near this yellow area. You can easily turn on chunk borders by pressing F3 + G. Doing so will display all chunks.

This means that if, while in-game, you press F3 and notice that the first and third coordinates next to “Chunk:” both equal 9, and you are standing over the X marked on the treasure map, then the treasure will be directly below your current position.
