En 1828 ocurre el combate entre el Guerrero, que mandaba su sobrino David Henry Porter, y la fragata española Lealtad, con resultados adversos para los mexicanos. Así mismo, preocupa a David Porter la situación política de México y lo precario de su economía.
Al mando inmediato del Guerrero, quedó su sobrino David Henry Porter; como oficiales Carlos E. Hawkins y Alejandro Thompson, además de los dos hijos de David Porter, David Dixon y Thomas. A fines del mes de abril de 1824 el Guerrero izó el pabellón nacional y zarpó de Nueva York al Golfo de México.
