In general terms, the Czech Republic is a hilly plateau surrounded by relatively low mountains. The bordering mountain ranges can be observed on the physical map of the Czech Republic above.
Topographic map. The Czech Republic lies mostly between latitudes 48° and 51° N and longitudes 12° and 19° E. Bohemia, to the west, consists of a basin drained by the Elbe (Czech: Labe) and the Vltava rivers, surrounded by mostly low mountains, such as the Krkonoše range of the Sudetes.

It comprises the historical provinces of Bohemia and Moravia along with the southern tip of Silesia, collectively called the Czech Lands. In 2016 the country adopted the name ‘Czechia’ as a shortened, informal name for the Czech Republic. The capital is Prague.
