The de Havilland Aircraft Company was a British aviation manufacturer founded in 1920 when Airco, of which Geoffrey de Havilland had been chief designer, was sold.
The Tiger Moth was then stored for over 25 years. The Museum acquired the aircraft through George Neal, then a de Havilland Canada test pilot. The Tiger Moth was donated to the Museum by John Weir in 1973. A five year restoration program followed and late in 1977 the Tiger Moth returned to the skies.
With war on the horizon, the de Havilland Aircraft Company established a factory at Rongotai in Wellington in March 1939, to meet the coming demand for Tiger Moth trainers. The RNZAF placed its first order in August, for 100 aircraft to equip the four elementary flying training schools that were hastily being established around the country.
Initial production DH.82s were powered by 80kW (120hp) engines, while the DH.82A introduced in 1937 featured a 97kW (130hp) engine, and was the most produced version.
