When we hear the word dictatorship, we first think of North Korea, Chile in the 1970s and 1980s, or Germany around 1940. In fact, it is rather rare for an individual to exercise absolute and uncontrolled power in a state. Dictatorships are also those states in which a group of people exercises power.
Countries. The Democracy-Dictatorship Index has the main regime types of "democracy" and "dictatorship" and three sub-types for each as well. Democracies can be either parliamentary, semi-presidential, or presidential and dictatorships can be civilian, military, or royal.
