This is huge and I’d suspect is the #1 reason people get off the trail at this early point. Oh sure, many will say it’s an ankle or a knee that took them off trail, but underneath it all, it’s their brain that took them off.

At that point, knocking out 20 miles in the White Mountains was a breeze without having a 50-lb garbage can in each hand…. Even 10 years ago, 20-mile hikes on the AT while living in northern Virginia were still a breeze. Well, that was without a pack.
