Truman decided he did not need formal authorization from Congress, believing that most legislators supported his position; this would come back to haunt him later when the stalemated conflict was dubbed "Mr. Truman's War" by legislators. The event is commemorated by a plaque on the now disused railway platform. Terowie is 20 km south of Peterborough which did become the central railway hub in 1969, when the standard gauge track was built west to Port Augusta.

General MacArthur fled to caves far from battle, leading to the nickname ‘Dugout’ and then hopped the first PT boat he could and fled the war zone, promising “I’ll be back.”
