The Duchy of Nassau (German: Herzogtum Nassau) was an independent state between 1806 and 1866, located in what is now the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. It was a member of the Confederation of the Rhine and later of the German Confederation .
Walramian Nassau was also made a duchy at this time. The extinction of the Usingen line in 1816 made William of Weilburg sole duke of Nassau. By supporting the losing Austrian side in the Seven Weeks’ War (1866), William’s successor , Duke Adolf, lost the duchy to Prussia; thereafter, it formed most of the Wiesbaden district of Prussia’s Hesse-Nassau province.

The county of Nassau-Dillenberg becomes subsidiary to the title Prince of Orange as William the Silent becomes Stadhoulder in Holland. The county is renamed Nassau-Orange. When the United States announced its independence from Great Britain in 1776, Nassau was a sovereign, independent state. With the 1806 dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, Nassau was enlarged and elevated to duchy status. In 1815 the Duchy of Nassau became part of the German Confederation.

Unfortunately for the Duchy, Austria lost and as a result Nassau was annexed by Prussia on October 5, 1866. The annexion was proclaimed in Wiesbaden on October 9.
