Poynter was the son of architect Ambrose Poynter. He was born in Paris, France, though his parents returned to Britain soon after his birth.

Sir Edward John Poynter, primer baronet (20 de marzo de 1836 -26 de julio de 1919) fue un pintor, diseñador y dibujante inglés, que se desempeñó como presidente de la Real Academia. Poynter era hijo del arquitecto Ambrose Poynter. Nació en París, Francia, aunque sus padres regresaron a Gran Bretaña poco después de su nacimiento.
