Death Eli Cohen, publicly hanged in the Marjeh Square, Damascus, on 18 May 1965. Cohen was found guilty of espionage by a military tribunal and sentenced to death under martial law. He had been repeatedly interrogated and tortured. Israel staged an international campaign for clemency, hoping to persuade Syria to not execute him.
