In 988 Ferrara was ceded by the Church to the House of Canossa, but at the death of Matilda of Tuscany in 1115 it became a free commune. During the 12th century the history of the town was marked by the wrestling for power between two preeminent families, the Guelph Adelardi and the Ghibelline Salinguerra.

Historia de Ferrara y curiosidades. La historia de Ferrara es, sin duda, fascinante. Según una leyenda, Ferrara era una doncella troyana que escapó de la ruina de su patria y decidió fundar una nueva ciudad. El primer documento oficial que da nombre a Ferrara fue emitido por el rey lombardo Astolfo, siete siglos y medio después de Cristo.
Historia. Ferrara surgió en los siglos VII y VIII a orillas del Po y de sus canales secundarios. Los orígenes de Ferrara son inciertos y aparece por primera vez en un documento en 754 como parte del exarcado de Rávena.
