It was politically, economically, and culturally one of the most important cities in Europe and the world from the 14th to 16th centuries.

It was once the centre of medieval European trade and finance and was one of the wealthiest cities. It is also considered the birthplace of the Renaissance movement and has been called “the Athens of the Middle Ages”.
