Fotheringhay Castle was a favoured residence of Richard, who became Duke of York and a powerful magnate. Married to Cecily Neville of the House of Neville, an influential family in northern England, he fathered two future kings: Edward IV and Richard III, and the latter was born at Fotheringhay Castle in 1452. Fotheringhay is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England. It is 4 miles (6.4 km) north-east of Oundle and around 13 miles (21 km) west of Peterborough . It is most noted for being the site of Fotheringhay (or Fotheringay) Castle which was razed in 1627.

1. Fotheringhay Castle. All that remains of Fotheringhay Castle today is a mound of earth on which the keep once stood and a lump of stone at its foot. In the late 11th or early 12th century, a castle loomed over the gentle bend in the River Nene. Rebuilt by Edmund, Duke of York, the fifth son of Edward III, it became the seat of the House of York.

He usurped the throne of his nephew Edward V in 1483 and perished in defeat to Henry Tudor (thereafter Henry VII ) at the Battle of Bosworth Field .
