Die Fahne hoch! belongs to a group of twenty-four black paintings that brought the young Frank Stella instant art world notoriety. What appear at first to be white lines are actually bare, narrow spaces of unprimed canvas between the standardized black bands that the artist applied with a housepainter’s brush.

Die Fahne Hoch! is an enamel on canvas painting by American artist Frank Stella, completed in 1959. It is held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York. Description and analysis. The use of basic geometric systems in the work is regarded by many as the precursor of Minimalism.

El título de esta obra, Die Fahne Hoch, significa literalmente “el estandarte izado”. Viene de un himno marcial de la organización de las juventudes nazis. Stella destacó que las proporciones de este lienzo son muy similares a las de las grandes banderas desplegadas por los nazis.
Die Fahne Hoch! (1959) es una de esas pinturas. Este cuadro recibe su nombre ("El estandarte levantado en español) de la primera línea del Host-Wessel-Lied, el himno del Partido Nacional Socialista de Trabajadores de Alemania, y Stella señaló que es de las mismas proporciones que los estandartes utilizados por dicha organización.

Die Fahne Hoch! is named after the anthem of the Nazi Party, the Horst-Wessel-Lied, and is one of several paintings in the series that make direct reference to Nazism. By applying a hotly emotive title to the image, Stella's ironic purpose was that of destabilizing the idea of meaning itself.
