Hace 5 días · MONCK: General George Monck or Monk, 1 st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670) was a career soldier who worked his way up through the ranks, to become one of Oliver Cromwell’s most trusted commanders, proving to be as canny at political strategy as he was at warfare.
Hace 5 días · He did so and was again proclaimed king in 1660, thanks to the support of General Monck, who had fought alongside Cromwell in the Civil War. The population at large abhorred the Puritanism with associated prohibitions introduced by Cromwell and rejoiced at the return of Charles on May 29, 1660, his thirtieth birthday, and his brothers, the Dukes of York and Gloucester.

Widely regarded as one of the most talented soldiers of the period, he fought throughout the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and was largely responsible for victory in the 1650 to 1651 Scottish campaign .
Hace 5 días · This is the oldest regiment in the regular army in continuous active service. Part of the Household Division, it can trace its roots to Cromwell's New Model Army. It takes its name from the village in Scotland where General Monck crossed the River Tweed in support of the Monarchy in 1660. Hint
Hace 4 días · Lord Oranmore and Browne married Catherine Anne Isabella, daughter of Henry Monck, in 1811. He died in January 1860, aged 72, and was succeeded in the barony by his son Geoffrey. Lady Oranmore and Browne died in 1865. Another son was William Montague Browne (1823–1883) an Officer in the Confederate States Army. Notes
