Unfortunately, he crashed it during its first very short flight at Seven Barrows near Litchfield, Hampshire in December 1909. [2] . He built a fresh biplane, making his first flight in it from a meadow near Newbury in September 1910. [3] . A memorial plaque presently marks the event.

Broad left the company in 1935 and Waight took his place, but he was killed in the de Havilland T.K.4 crash in October 1937, and Geoffrey de Havilland Jr. then became the company's chief test pilot at the age of 27. Waight's death plunged Geoffrey into the development trials of the Albatross.

The wreckage of DH.108 TG306 was recovered on 28 September 1946, the day after the accident. However, Geoffrey De Havilland's body was not recovered until it was washed ashore at Whitstable on 7th October 1946.

British test pilot Geoffrey de Havilland Jr. was killed while testing an experimental jet-powered aircraft, dubbed the “Swallow,” in preparation for an attempt to break the mythical sound barrier. The aircraft completely disintegrated during a high-speed dive. De Havilland’s body washed up in the Thames River 10 days later.
