Described last year as the 'only artist who can unite England' during the Brexit crisis, George Shaw 's paintings of derelict suburban houses and sombre interiors now appear to embody the UK's moment of self-isolation amid the coronavirus outbreak.
George Shaw (b.1966) Government Art Collection. Painter, born in Coventry, Warwickshire, who graduated in fine art from Sheffield Polytechnic, 1986–9; did a postgraduate certificate there, 1991–2; and gained his master’s in painting at Royal College of Art, 1996–8. His degree show was a sell-out.

George Shaw was born in Coventry, England in 1966. He studied at Sheffield Polytechnic and later the Royal College of Art, London. In 2001, Shaw was shortlisted for the Turner Prize for his solo exhibition ‘The Sly and Unseen Day’, a selection of works focusing on the Tile Hill housing estate, Coventry where he grew up.
