Ian Ernest Gilmore Evans ( né Green; May 13, 1912 – March 20, 1988) [1] was a Canadian–American jazz pianist, arranger, composer and bandleader. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest orchestrators in jazz, playing an important role in the development of cool jazz, modal jazz, free jazz, and jazz fusion.

Gil was underpaid and often over looked because he was totally immersed in the music! His love and passion for music was all consuming.
Gil graduated from high school in 1930 and entered the College of the Pacific, Stockton, in the fall. He transferred to Modesto Junior College, a bigger school, and his band started getting more local jobs at college dances and resorts.
