English: The Grand Duchy of Hesse (1806–1816), Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine (1816–1918) — a former state that existed in Hesse, Germany. It was formed in 1806 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire as a result of the actions of Napoleon, who then elevated the former Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt to the level of grand duchy.
Darmstadt was formerly the capital of a sovereign country, the Grand Duchy of Hesse and its successor, the People's State of Hesse, a federal state of Germany. As the capital of an increasingly prosperous duchy , the city gained some international prominence and remains one of the wealthiest cities in Europe.
Hessen-Kassel remains an electorate despite the lack of a Holy Roman empire because being known as the 'Electorate of Hesse' differentiates it from the grand duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt, the junior of the two states which is now superior in rank thanks to its title. 1814 - 1815
The Grand Duchy joined the German Empire in 1871. As a small state within the Empire, the Grand Duchy had limits placed on its autonomy, but significant religious, social, and cultural reforms were carried out. During the November Revolution after World War I in 1918, the Grand Duchy was overthrown and replaced by the People's State of Hesse.

The coat of arms of the German state of Hesse was introduced in 1949. It is based on the historical coat of arms of the Ludovingian landgraves of Hesse and Thuringia.
