With the independence of Mecklenburg-Strelitz at stake Adolf Friedrich had requested in his will that Duke Christian Ludwig, second son of Friedrich Franz IV, become grand duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as it was thought unlikely that Carl Michael would assume the throne having indicated before the war that he wished to renounce his succession rights.

Duke Georg’s sister Countess Marie of Carlow (1893-1979), by marriage Countess Kleinmichel, was therefore the last person to hold the Carlow title.
