Except for the inverted still lifes of the Dutch painter Pieter Aertsen ((1508–1575), Caillebotte's "Young Man at His Window" is the earliest painting of a landscape (or cityscape) framed by a door or window that I could find. I'm sure I'm wrong, but it seems as if no one tried to do this again until Caillebotte came along.
