Art historian Robert Delevoy wrote that Moreau "brought symbolist polyvalence to its highest point in Jupiter and Semele ." [2] : 147 p.

El pintor francés Gustave Moreau, formado en el Romanticismo y con un profundo conocimiento de los pintores italianos del Renacimiento, desarrolló un estilo personal con el que se anticipó al simbolismo francés de finales del siglo XIX. Estudió con François-Édouard Picot en la École des Beaux-Arts y expuso por primera vez en el Salon de 1851.
