Salome Dancing before Herod (French: Salomé dansant devant Hérode) is an oil painting produced in 1876 by the French Symbolist artist Gustave Moreau. The subject matter is taken from the New Testament , depicting Salome —the daughter of Herod II and Herodias —dancing before Herod Antipas .

Salomé ou Salomé dansant devant Hérode est une peinture à l'huile réalisée en 1876 par l'artiste symboliste français Gustave Moreau. Le sujet est tiré du Nouveau Testament, représentant Salomé - la fille d'Hérode II et d'Hérodias dansant devant Hérode Antipas. Il a fallu sept ans à Moreau pour peindre ce tableau [1].

According to Biblical sources, Salome agreed to dance before her father, Herod II, King of Judea, in exchange for receiving the severed head of John the Baptist. Moreau treated the subject some fifteen times in oil.
