The son of a wealthy textile merchant, Cartier-Bresson studied painting at André Lhote’s academy in Montparnasse in 1927, and soon thereafter entered the bohemian world of the Parisian avant-garde.

He started with music but gave that up as well as painting before settling on photography. As a child, he owned a Box Brownie camera, but he didn’t consider making pictures a career until he saw Martin Munkacsi’s Three Boys At Lake Tanganyika.
