By the end of the war, he held the rank of a major general after participating in many major and critical battles.
On March 8, 1785, Knox took over the Secretary of War position in the Confederation government, succeeding Benjamin Lincoln. When the new government formed in 1789, Knox became the 1st United States Secretary of War, a position he held through 1794.
Benjamin Lincoln and later Henry Knox held the position. When Washington was inaugurated as the first President under the Constitution, he appointed Knox to continue serving as Secretary of War. The secretary of war was the head of the War Department. At first, he was responsible for all military affairs, including naval affairs.
