Childhood & Early Life. Herbert Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in Iowa to Jesse Hoover and Hulda Randall Minthorn. His father was a blacksmith and farm implement store owner, and both his parents were Quakers. Herbert had one brother and one sister.
Thirty-first president of the United States, Herbert Hoover (1874-1964), was in kinship care as a child. Herbert Clark Hoover was born into a Quaker family in West Branch, Iowa. His father, Jesse Hoover, died when Herbert was six, and his mother, Hulda Minthorn Hoover, when Herbert was nine.
As a child, Hoover consistently attended schools, but he did little reading on his own aside from the Bible. Hoover's father, noted by the local paper for his "pleasant, sunshiny disposition", died in 1880 at the age of 34 of a sudden heart attack.
