Based on Robert Bloch's 1959 novel Psycho, which was inspired by the case of Ed Gein, the film was produced on a tight budget of $800,000 (equivalent to $8.2 million in 2023) and shot in black-and-white on a spare set using crew members from Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
