HMS Pathfinder - The first warship sunk by a U-Boat On Saturday 5th September 1914 HMS Pathfinder, a Royal Navy Scout Cruiser was torpedoed by the German submarine U21 in the North Sea off St Abbs Head. A single torpedo hit the forward magazine causing it to explode, Pathfinder sank in 4 minutes with the loss of 260 lives.
