Sir John Everett Millais, 1st Baronet PRA ( UK: / ˈmɪleɪ / MIL-ay, US: / mɪˈleɪ / mil-AY; [1] [2] 8 June 1829 – 13 August 1896) was an English painter and illustrator who was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. [3] He was a child prodigy who, aged eleven, became the youngest student to enter the Royal Academy Schools.

When the painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1849 the following stanzas from Keats’ poem was included in the catalogue: Fair Isabel, poor simple Isabel!

  5. Isabella' was one of the first paintings made in the new Pre-Raphaelite style. It was begun shortly after the founding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848, when Millais was only 19. The subject is taken from a poem by John Keats (1795-1821), based on a story by the Italian writer Boccaccio (died 1375).
