Jackie’s widow, Rachel Robinson, said: “I thought it was a very supportive gesture, and very instinctive on Pee Wee’s part. You shouldn’t forget that Pee Wee was the captain, and he led the way.
Jackie, though badly injured, was the sole survivor of the accident. He would later call it the single saddest day of his life.
