12 de sept. de 2022 · King James inherited the throne from his brother Charles II of England (r. 1660-1685) who died in February 1685 without any legitimate children. This succession was not straightforward since while Charles had been alive James had converted to Catholicism (in 1668).
When Charles II died due to apoplexy, without any legitimate children, he was crowned James II, King of England and Ireland and James VII of Scotland on 23 April 1685. He worked harder than his brother and was less accommodative towards his advisors who did not agree with him on certain issues.
She was to bear James several children, none of whom survived infancy apart from James Francis Edward (1688–1766), later known as James III or the Old Pretender, and Louise (1692–1712). James succeeded his brother as king on 6 February 1685. His vigorous promotion of catholicism alienated his protestant subjects in England and Scotland.
