Influenciado por el libro de Hans Prinzhorn, Artistry of the Mentally Ill, Dubuffet acuñó el término Art Brut (arte en bruto) para el arte producido por no profesionales que trabajan por fuera de las normas estéticas, tales como el arte de los pacientes mentales, prisioneros y niños.

El art brut aspira a una forma de creación en la que la espontaneidad y el instinto prevalezcan sobre la razón y la formación técnica. La importancia del arte de Dubuffet radica, por ello, en haber sido uno de los primeros artistas modernos en renunciar a los materiales y las técnicas tradicionales.
