Jean Nouvel fue el arquitecto encargado de llevar a cabo esta ampliación. Con ello se completó un largo proceso de construcción, transformación y ampliación de un edificio público, que nació como hospital y actualmente acoge las múltiples actividades inherentes a un museo de arte contemporáneo.
