BENTHAM, JEREMY (1748-1832) Nac. en Houndsditch, Londres, estudió en Oxford. Su principal interés fue el Derecho. Desplegó gran actividad en favor de reformas jurídicas y educativas, ocupándose de multitud de cuestiones —desde la libertad de prensa hasta el sistema penal— en un sentido extremadamente liberal.
Jeremy Bentham ha pasado a la historia del pensamiento, además de por sus revolucionarias propuestas reformistas, por la filosofía en la que éstas estaban basadas y que él mismo fundó: el utilitarismo.
