The loss of her husband after 35 years of marriage was tough for her and soon after she began to talk about hiking the Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia.

On December 13, 1880, Jesse Hoover died of heart failure brought on by pneumonia. He was only 34 years old. Hulda died just over three years later and is buried next to Jesse in the West Branch Municipal Cemetery on North Maple Street.

His housekeeper arrived at his home to find the legendary lawman's lifeless body by his bed, according to The New York Times. His cause of death was later revealed to be "hypertensive cardiovascular disease." Hoover had been struggling with heart issues for a while before his death.
