On Monday night, Nov, 15, James E. Babbitt died peacefully at his home in Flagstaff with family, after a battle with illness. In the days to come, as word spread, the cry of hearts breaking could be felt from the bottom of the Grand Canyon to the tops of Hopi mesas.

From 1983 to 1989, Louganis was in a romantic relationship with his manager, R. James "Jim" Babbitt. Louganis has described the relationship as abusive, saying that at one point in 1983, Babbitt raped him at knifepoint. Louganis also accused Babbitt of taking 80% of his earnings.

Jim passed away in the fall of 2021. During his life, he played an instrumental role in the vibrancy of Flagstaff’s culture. Jim worked humbly to support arts, culture, and science in our community – contributing time and resources to many of our beloved institutions.
