Johannesburg was established in 1886, following the discovery of gold, on what had been a farm. Due to the extremely large gold deposits found along the Witwatersrand, within ten years, the population had grown to over 100,000 inhabitants.
The 1960s in Johannesburg were, depending on one’s point of view, the best of times or the worst of times. With oppositional movements banned, the National Party had a free hand to elaborate its vision of “grand apartheid.”
'Joburg' as it is called by locals, was founded in the heydays of one of the World's biggest and richest gold rushes - earning it the name of 'Egoli' meaning 'place of gold'. As the most powerful Commercial Centre on the African continent, Johannesburg generates 16% of South Africa's GDP and employs 12% of the National Workforce.
