Young John Bauer applied to the art academy in Stockholm at an early age. But at just sixteen, he was unfortunately too young to be accepted. So he first began an apprenticeship at Althin's Målarskola. A few years later, he was overjoyed when he was finally accepted to the Academy of Art.

John Bauer wurde 1882 als Sohn des bayerischen Metzgers Joseph Bauer und dessen Ehefrau Emma geboren. Sein Vater war 1863 aus Bayern nach Schweden ausgewandert und hatte seine Frau Emma Wadell in Jönköping kennengelernt.
